Careers in Archaeology

A career in archaeology requires hard work, dedication, often specialisation and a variety of skills. These include: an enquiring mind and an ability to question, perseverance in order to pursue research, creative skills and imagination to reconstruct the past based on often incomplete evidence, and planning skills in terms of time, budgets and projects. As a discipline, it involves science and the arts and involves many different techniques including excavation, survey, laboratory work, documentary research and artefact analysis.
