Archaeology is a valuable resource for educational work, providing a wealth of information about people in the past, and opportunities to encourage a sense of place in the present. As a multi-disciplinary subject, it can be used as a topic to deliver most areas of the curriculum and provide pupils with many skills useful for other subjects.
CSA's work within formal education has involved:
- encouraging better provision for archaeology within the curriculum through consultation responses and lobbying. Click here to find out about our work influencing the Curriculum for Excellence
- supporting the teaching profession in using archaeology by providing information and access to resources such as our interactive kits, artefact handling collection and activity packs
- providing archaeological workshops for schools, mainly through participation in the school programmes of large events such as the Edinburgh International Science Festival
We have also carried out specific work with schools catering for children with special educational needs such as the Royal Blind School, and Kaimes School for autistic children, both in Edinburgh.
CSA provides both information, resources and services that encourage the use of archaeology in the classroom, including an education lecture, and education pack and various workshops. For further information about our services and resources, click on the following links:
(Please note: Unfortunately, CSA's workshop equipment and artefacts are unavailable as of 1st September 2007. CSA hope to make them available for borrowing by the beginning of 2008.)
During the coming year, CSA hopes to develop resources that will be available to download from this website including activity sheets and information on using archaeology in the classroom. Please bookmark this page and revisit later in the year.
For those already considering studying archaeology in higher education, CSA have a factsheet outlining everything you need to know.
