ADOPTING COLDINGHAM PRIORY
The Council for Scottish Archaeology (CSA) and the Friends of Coldingham Priory are inviting the local community to take part in an archaeological open day at the Priory on Saturday 24th February. CSA and the Friends are working, along with Tweed Forum and Scottish Borders Council to secure the long term future of the Priory.
As part of this, CSA and the Friends are designing a community garden to replace an area of wasteground at the southern end of the site. The proposed garden will be in a monastic style which will be similar to that used by the priory monks. The archaeological open day will be an opportunity for the wider Coldingham community to come along to the Priory and take part in the survey work which forms the first stage of this project. There will be a chance to try geophysical surveying, just like the professionals on Time Team, with the Edinburgh Archaeological Field Society. There will also be an opportunity to meet the Friends and CSAs Adopt a Monument Officer, Helen Bradley who is helping co-ordinate the project.
About the project, Helen said, 'I'm looking forward to welcoming people from Coldingham to the Priory, which is a fantastic site. The work we're doing here will help to secure the Priory for the future, and I hope that as many people as possible will come down and join me and the Friends of Coldingham Priory on Saturday'.
CSA and the Friends will be at the Priory from 10 until 4 on Saturday 24th February.
