Adopt a Monument

Coldingham Priory Community Garden

The Friends of Coldingham Priory and members of the wider Coldingham community have adopted the ruins of this beautiful 12th century Benedictine Priory. They are designing a garden to replace an area of waste ground at the southern end of the Priory, which may include the creation of a ‘physic garden’ containing herbs with medicinal properties (similar to those which may have been planted in the past by the priory monks).

This is a biodiversity project which will take into account the importance of including rare local plant species. The Friends will learn how to conduct geophysical survey across the plot, and the spoil left by a 1970’s excavation will be metal-detected for any stray artefacts. The local primary school ‘eco-committee’ will be involved in activities at the site, using the garden as a valuable learning resource.
