Lyne Churchyard Project
Peeblesshire Archaeological Society (PAS) has adopted a grave memorial at Lyne Parish Church, near Peebles.
The stone is an unusual piece of 18th century symbolic folk known as an ‘Adam and Eve’ stone, depicting a carved scene of the Temptation in the Garden of Eden. These stones, once common in the Scottish Lowlands and Borders, are now rare examples of the religious fervour of this period of Scotland’s history, where emblems of sin, death, and resurrection were common features of gravestones.
Thanks to funding from Historic Scotland and Awards for All, the
stone is now being conserved and interpretation is being prepared to
tell visitors about the rarity and importance of the memorial.
PAS have also been carrying out a graveyard recording project at the Kirk and are planning to link the kirk and the conserved stone into a wider heritage trail of local archaeological sites in the future.
