Carved Stones
The CSA Carved Stones Adviser pilot project was successful in bringing together groups and organisations with an interest in protecting the nation's graveyards and developing best practice in recording graveyards. The full scope of the products delivered by the pilot project, including guidance notes on recording buried tombstones (produced in conjunction with the Moray Burial Ground Research Group), making a graveyard plan and identifying stone decay can be found on the website which has been redesigned and will continue to be updated
The graveyard and gravestone recording programmes that the project ran have resulted in revised forms and guidance notes which will also be made available from the website.
Although the Carved Stones Adviser pilot project has now drawn to a close, CSA are delighted to have received a Project Planning Grant from the Heritage Lottery Fund to support the completion of an HLF Heritage Grant to take this work forward on a larger scale. The new project will be known as Scotland's Historic Graveyards Project. Further details on the progress of the HLF application are available on the Scottish Graveyards website.
In the meantime CSA would welcome your views on what CSA should be doing about other
types of carved stones in Scotland and would draw your attention to some useful sites:
